World Summit Award wraps up successful edition of world’s top digital content for changing society in Singapore, awarding 8 top products from 40 WSA winners

Singapore, July 1, 2016: The UN based World Summit Award has selected the world’s best solutions for content enriched digital development in 2016. The 8 WSA Global Champions have been exclusively selected by an on-site Grand Jury of 40 international ICT experts at the WSA Social Innovation Congress held in Singapore, 29 June -1 July 2016.

The flexible banking solution Meniga, from Iceland, was declared the category winner for Business & Commerce. Meniga seeks to take online banking to the next level by providing users a complete overview and control of their personal finances.

Overall winner in Government & Open Data was Local Authority Finances, from Ireland, an independent think tank that makes public policies more understandable by combining public and independent information on public spending.

Also from Ireland, Coderdojo made the run for category Learning & Science. The open source, volunteer­ led, global movement offers free programming clubs for young people to explore coding, web development, and programming in an informal and creative environment.

Argentina’s Creators topped the Entertainment & Lifestyle category with their trans-media IDoTainment TV series for the whole family, focusing creatively on the importance of relations with others.

In the category Culture & Tourism, Teleport Flock, from Estonia, convinced the Jury with their easy to use tool that lets remote groups of people plan and budget their next get-together anywhere in the world. In their system, users can book the entire trip with just one click.

The overall winner in the category Media & News was Imagga, from Bulgaria, an innovative image recognition solution using computer vision, machine/deep learning and convolutional network algorithms to automate the process of assigning keywords and/or categories to images.

MIROCULUS from Mexico rocked the category Health & Environment; having the potential to revolutionize our Health Care system. The low-cost, open source device can easily and affordably check for cancer using a single blood sample.

The Social Coin, from Spain, was announced the proud winner for the category Inclusion & Empowerment. The Social Coin is a Software as a Solution (SaaS) platform to help enterprises, smart cities, and universities to achieve their Corporate Social Responsibility goals by engaging communities in acts of altruism and community-building.

The 8 WSA Global Champions are a terrific example of how digital innovation can make a true social impact and solve local issues by finding technical solutions. They were honored for their pioneering innovation in the field of digital content during the awards ceremony of the highly acclaimed ICT knowledge-sharing event, WSA Social Innovation Congress 2016.

Hosted by the Creative Alliance Group Singapore, the three day event showcased digital Ingenuity impacting society from across 178 countries. Eight main categories covered a range of key economic, social and business areas, from commerce and government to environment, health and education.

Focusing on originality, diversity and creative content, the 40 winning teams and 8 Global Champions were selected by a jury panel of subject-matter experts within the framework of the United Nation’s World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) and represented 24 UN member states from South East Asia, Europe, South America, Africa and the Middle East.
