The well-being of a nation depends on the levels of awareness and agency of its youth. Yet, many young men and women face barriers to knowledge and are often left at the edge of sustainable development initiatives.

Kathmandu, August 17, 2016: UNESCO, in collaboration with Clean Up Nepal, celebrated the ‘International Youth Day’ by bringing students and teachers together for the prize giving ceremony of the 2016 School Essay Contest on the topic of ‘Waste burning: its impacts and the role of youth to mitigate it’. The theme of the 2016 International Youth Day (IYD) this year focuses on the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production.

The essay topic was selected to sensitize younger generations on the ever growing environmental problem of waste management in Nepal, while encouraging them to play an active role in tackling this issue.

Since the concept of an essay contest was launched on 2016 International Environment Day on June 5, 40 schools within the Kathmandu Valley had held internal competitions and over 1700 students had produced their best pieces of writing. The winning essays from each school were later sent to UNESCO for assessment.

Out of the 40 schools, Rubin Luitel from Bright Horizon English High School, Prabhash GC from Sainik Awasik Maha Vidhyalaya, and Abhinav Dev from Budhanilkantha School were able to bag the first, second, and third prize respectively. The winners were awarded with a cash prize of 30,000, 20,000, and 10,000 Nepali Rupees.
