10th Republic Day celebrated with fanfare

Kathmandu, May 29, 2017: The 10th Republic Day is being observed throughout the country with great fervour and enthusiasm by organising various programmes on Monday.

The Republic Day Celebration Main Organising Committee led by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal organised a special function at the Army Pavilion, Tundikhel in Kathmandu today.

The day marks the advent of federal democratic republic following the abolition of monarchy from the country.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Vice-president Nanda Bahadur Pun, Prime Minister Dahal, Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar, ministers, lawmakers, chief of security agencies, high-level government officials, chief of diplomatic missions in Nepal and general public attended the special function.

Addressing the function, PM Dahal said that the first phase of the local level elections has been conducted with participation of the people in a fair and free environment.

PM Dahal described the local level elections as a milestone in consolidating the federal democratic republic in the country.

“The federal democratic republic has been institutionalised in the country through the decade-long struggle of the Nepali people,” he said.

The Nepali Army held a parade and showered flowers from a helicopter during the ceremony. Similarly, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Scouts, and various clubs, schools and other institutions performed march past and showcased their skills and cultural processions.

Earlier in the morning, a rally was organised in the capital to mark the day.

The then Constituent Assembly had declared Nepal a Republican state on May 28, 2008.
