131 cases of VAW in Baisakh month alone

Kathmandu, May 25, 2016: Despite various organisations running campaigns against gender-based violence across the nation, still it is rampant in the country.

A total of 131 incidents of VAW occurred across the country in a single month of the Nepali month of Baisakh, according to the report made public by the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC) Nepal.

The report said that of the total incidents, 60 percent took place in the Tarai districts alone. Likewise, 31 percent of the incidents occurred in hilly districts and the remaining nine percent in mountainous districts.

Likewise, of the nature of VAW, 35 percent suffered physical tortures and 31 percent underwent mental tortures. Similarly, 10 percent were killed.

The six percent were raped and five percent were exposed to sexual violence. And, two percent suffered attempted rape.

The report also said that 56 percent suffered VAW at the hands of relatives and 16 percent by family members.

Likewise, nine percent underwent VAW at the hands of villagers, two percent by teachers and the remaining at the hands of friends and lovers.
