BEIJING, April 5, 2015: 21 people were killed when a bus dived 100 meters into a river in southwest China on Saturday. According to the official Xinhua News Agency, the bus boarding 24 passengers fell off a mountain highway onto a dry river bank. Other 3 passengers who survived the accident are also injured.
Inspectors claimed that the bus was illegally using a road built for smaller vehicles in Bijie city, Guizhou province. The highway network and number of new drivers are growing rapidly where traffic laws and safety are widely disobeyed.
As per the figures from the Ministry of Public Security, a 1.9 percent increase has been observed in accidents from 2013. Road accidents killed more than 87,200 people from about 426,000 accidents in the first 10 months of 2014. However, a study published in 2011 by a group of Chinese and US researchers finalized that the number of fatal accidents was twice as high as police said.
