Anuradha Koirala to be honored with Padma Shri Award

Kathmandu, January 25, 2017: Nepali social worker Anuradha Koirala is to be honored with Padma Shri award by the government of India.

She was selected among the 89 Padma awardees this year.

Koirala is the founder of Maiti Nepal, an organization actively working to prevent and rescue Nepali girls from cross-border sex trafficking, child prostitution, and various other forms of exploitation and torture.

The announcement for Padma awards was made on the occasion of 68th Republic Day of India.


Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.

President of India would confer the award amidst a ceremonial function to be held at Rashtrapati Bhawan around March/ April this year.

Koirala is the only foreigner to be honored with the award this year.
