Kathmandu, January 29, 2017: Six think tanks from Nepal have made it to the Global Go To Think Tank Index Report for 2016, an annual evaluation by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.
The report has recognized the existence of 12 think tanks in Nepal but only 6 of the 12 have figured on the Top Think Tanks in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
Among 100 think tanks listed under Top Think Tanks in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Centre for Economic Development and Administration (CEDA) has been listed at 21, the Institute for Social and Environmental Transition (ISET-N) is listed at 26, Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies (CNAS) is ranked at 63, Nepal South Asia Centre (NESAC) is ranked at 65, Nepal Economic Forum (NEF) is ranked at 84 and Samriddhi Foundation is ranked at 97.
Samriddhi Foundation, a think tank that promotes the ideas of freedom- civil, political and economic – through public policy recommendations, has made it as the only think tank from Nepal to be featured on Top Domestic Economic Policy Think Tanks, Top Transparency and Good Governance Think Tanks and Best Independent Think Tanks (globally) in addition to the Top Think Tanks in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
â€œSamriddhi Foundation managed to maintain its presence in the same categories from last year. This year, it ranked at 60 on the Top Transparency and Good Governance Think Tanks out of 64 think tanks and was placed at 120 out of 148 think tanks on the Best Independent Think Tanks category. It was also placed at the 135th spot out of 135 countries on Top Domestic Economic Policy Think Tanks globally,â€ says the foundation in a statement.
The index catalogued 6,846 think tanks worldwide with inputs from over 4,750 journalists, policymakers, public and private donors, and area specialists from around the world. The categories this year were divided on the basis of geographical region, areas of research, and â€˜special achievementâ€™ involving ranking based on advocacy campaigns, programmes and upcoming think tanks.
