Shivu Pandey is a young and tech conscious public speaker and IT student from Rupandehi. He practices ethical hacking as he focuses on computer security and provides workshops to young students about cyber security in his community.
Shivu has been interested in technology and public speaking from a young age. His interest in technology made him attend various IT boot camps. He was exposed to the idea of cyber security in one the boot camps he attended in grade 9 that changed his outlook on cyber security of Nepal. “In the context of Nepal, Cyber security isn’t very strong, which is why we hear news of hacking almost every day. This workshop helped get some insights on cyber security,” he said. He started to research more on this issue and found out that the issue of hacking is more common in schools. So, he made a team of like-minded friends to conduct workshops in schools about cyber security.
Shivu wanted to pass on the knowledge about what he learned in boot camps to young minds who are more prone to cybercrimes. He and his team provided workshops and sessions with an aim to ensure security of internet users and also about Nepal’s cyber laws. “Our team also made short movies on this issue to make our workshops more impactful,” said Shivu. He believes that only awareness about cybercrime can help mitigate the issue of cybercrimes. If people are conscious while using internet, then there will be less crimes. He also thinks government should implement strict laws against such crimes.
With the help of his public speaking skills, he has provided workshops to five schools till now. The response to these workshops have been positive so far and wants to expand these classes to more schools and colleges.
Despite his innate hard work, he still has faced some hardships in his journey. “We ourselves were amateurs when we were starting off. We were in a learning phase, so it was a bit hard to develop content for our workshops,” he said. Everyone in his team weren’t experienced enough in terms of public speaking as well. Even though every school agreed to their session because of the relevance of the issue, it was hard to engage large number of students.
Shivu is also actively working in a startup called ‘Semi Colon Tech‘ through which he provides trainings and workshops. Along with this start up, he is also a part of Penteston Nepal, a platform which is working to strengthen cyber security of Nepal.
Glocal Teen Hero and his future plans
He heard about Glocal Teen Hero from one of his brothers who encouraged him to apply. “After I researched about this platform, I really got interested and thought we could take our workshops all over Nepal with this recognition,” he said. He aims of building digital Nepal and wants to strengthen cyber security of Nepal. He is also planning to initiate a startup that can help people in technology.
Shivu Pandey was selected among the 20 brightest young entrepreneurs, innovators and game changers below the age of 20 in Nepal, for the year 2019.
