October 24, Kathmandu: The 74th United Nations Day was celebrated today in the member states across the globe including Nepal.

24 October has been celebrated as the United Nations Day since 1948. On this day the UN officially came into being with the ratification of the UN Charter, the founding document for the UN, by most of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council namely China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The UN in Nepal each year celebrates this day by organizing different programs. UN Nepal kicked off the 74th UN Day on 24 October by organizing an interesting event at Rastriya Sabha Griha. Interactive discussion with young digital media influencers, speed mentoring sessions with youth-led by the UN Heads of Agencies, exhibitions, and engagement with speakers and audience from the corners of society were the major highlights of the event. There were more participants of the age below 25 and the event was successfully organized.

For the UN Studio, four guests were invited who were the young YouTuber, podcaster, programmer, and vlogger. The topics of discussion were chosen by the audience themselves through Voting Poll. The guests of the session were Samir Phuyal, young programmer and the recipient of Glocal Teen Hero 2019 award, Ms. Shristhi Kc, Director and the Founder of Blind Rocks, Ms. Bhumika Rai, a podcaster of Boju Bajai podcast and Ms. Sambriddhi Rai, who is a singer and a vlogger. They all introduced their initiation and the statement for discussion that got the highest poll was answered by all the guests. The first discussion was about –“Need of equal opportunities and equal treatment for all the people” and the second discussion was made on the topic-“Innovations create spaces for opportunities.” Every speaker gave their idea in the topics of discussions and they were able to inspire hundreds of audience listening to them.

In addition to this, a series of exclusive five-minute focused conversations between UN Heads of Agencies (HoAs) as mentors and youth as mentees took place where the youth could share their ideas and build a network. The queries regarding UN were also answered which was part of the speed mentoring session.

United Nations Day highlights the enduring ideals of the Charter, which entered into force on this date 74 years ago. Amid stormy global seas, the Charter remains our shared moral anchor,”- stated UN Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres.

Moreover, The UN Day celebration aims to provide an interactive space to the youth, such as digital photo booth, Virtual Intelligence with Experience of film corners to showcase the latest technology and innovations. Likewise, UN always promotes sustainable development and builds advocacy around the key priorities of the UN.
