Bajhang, Sept 2: Roughly 85 per cent of drinking water sources and tap water in remote Himalayan district, Bajhang, are found with coliform bacteria that can cause life-threatening disease jaundice and diarrhea.

The coliform bacteria was detected in a lab test of drinking water carried out by technical team of SUHARA in 37 VDCs of the district.

The Drinking Water and Sanitation Coordination Committee said the water is infected with coliform in lack of cleanliness in and around drinking water sources and unmanaged and tampered water supply pipes.

While carrying out tests in 591 drinking water and sources, coliform was found in 486 sources, said SUHARA Team Leader Bikas Rokaya.

He said a spate of district denizens have fallen prey to cholera and jaundice outbreak due to consumption of drinking water infected with coliform.

It is learnt that only 15 per cent Bajhang people consume boiled or filtered pure drinking water.
