A classical treat at the Kirateshwor Mahadev,Pashupati.

kathmandu,March 1: Kirateshwor Mahadev, one of the oldest temples in Nepal, has a tradition of a musical concert every month in its courtyard on Full Moon Day. A number of classical musicians perform for free in this program organized by Kirateshwor Sangeet Ashram. This attracts not just the older generation but the younger generation of music lovers as well.

Usually the program starts around 4 or 5 and ends at 8 or 9 in the evening. The standard of music in the program is great and it can be proved by the eagerness of the international musicians from India to play in the concert. This program at Kirateshwor helps to ensure that classical music remains alive in Nepal and the younger generation has the knowledge of the classical music. A variety of traditional instruments like Sitar, Sarod, Tanpura, Bansuri, Sarangi, Tabla are played every month to entertain the loyal audience that flocks the temple every month. It gives a true taste and flavor of traditional and classical Nepali music. Under the pale light of the full moon and the serene atmosphere of the temple, the music brings the whole atmosphere alive and one can’t escape from the magic that binds all the visitors. This tradition of organizing concert at Kirateshwor started in 1991 and ever since it has been a regular and popular destination for music lovers.

Kirateshwor Sangeet Ashram also conducts a competition every year for the children where they get to showcase their talents. The talented children are also given chance of performing during the later programs. It is organized to promote the classical music in Nepal and to attract the younger generation to classical music. The well wishers of Nepali music hope that the full moon ritual performed in the Kirateshwor Mahadev would continue to prevail for a long time to come.
