While South Korea has the highest number of Automated teller machines (ATMs) per 100,000 population, Myanmar has just one cash machine per 100,000 people.

January 8, 2017: South Korea has 278 ATMs per 100,000 population which is the highest in the world.

According to the World Bank’s last count , Australia is second among the top ten countries in Asia having most ATMs per 100,000 population.

The country has 164 ATMs per 100,000 people. On third number is Japan with 127 ATMs and fourth is Brunei with 79 ATMs.  Singapore has 59 ATMs per 100,000 population. China has 55 ATMs per 100,000 populations.

However, the latest IMF data shows that China has 254 ATMs cash machines per 100,000.

India like other South Asian countries has poor density of cash machines. India has only 18 ATMs though the present government in India is giving emphasis on cashless economy and has demonetised high value currency notes in November last year. The number remained at 8.85 at the end of 2011 and at 17.80 at the end of 2014.

At the end of June 2016, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, India had 215,039 ATMs compared to 182,687 in 2014, and 205,328 in 2015.

Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan have one of the lowest densities of ATMs in the world.
