December 15, 2014 : Auburn football player Jakell Lenard Mitchell was fatally shot early Sunday at an apartment complex in Auburn, Ala., where two former football players and another person were shot and killed in 2012.

Police answered a call at about 12:25 a.m. of shots fired at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex, a few miles from the campus. Mitchell, an 18-year-old freshman, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said he was “devastated and saddened” by the death of the promising player, a halfback.

Sunday’s shooting happened at the same apartment complex where authorities say Desmonte Leonard killed three men at a party in the summer of 2012. Tiger Lodge is popular with students, and there were two parties going on Saturday night at the complex. Final exams ended on Friday.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder. Markale Deandra Hart of Camp Hill, Ala., was taken into custody Sunday.

Happy Valley happenings. Penn State defensive tackle Anthony Zettel has asked an NFL committee that assesses college prospects to evaluate his chances in the draft, PennLive.com reported.

However, the 6-foot-4, 280-pound redshirt junior said he has “no intent right now” of leaving school early.

Zettel said he was told an evaluation from the NFL’s college advisory committee would be a smart decision, he told PennLive.

“I talked to a lot of really smart people . . . and they said, ‘That’s a good decision to make,’ ” he said. “So I did that, and I’m waiting to [hear] back.”

Zettel made first-team all-Big Ten this season. He led Penn State with 15 tackles for loss and eight sacks, and tied for first in interceptions, with three.

Offensive tackle Paris Palmer, who played for two years at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., has flipped his commitment from South Carolina to Penn State, he disclosed on Twitter.

The 6-foot-8, 305-pound Palmer, from Plymouth, N.C., made an official visit to Penn State and watched the Nittany Lions go against Michigan State. He was visited at home on Friday by coach James Franklin and his offensive staff and gave an oral commitment.

Palmer, the 20th player to commit to Penn State’s Class of 2015, was listed as the No. 9 junior-college prospect and the No. 1 offensive tackle by 247Sports.com.
