Kathmandu, Sept 8: Dr Harihar Dev Panta who is known as the ‘father of micro-finance in Nepal’ has passed away at the age of 72.
Panta had been suffering from lung cancer. He passed away at his house in Anamnagar, Kathmandu on Monday evening.
He is credited for introducing the concept of micro-finance to Nepal and the government had also honoured him as the Father of Micro-finance.
The Nirdhan Utthan Bank, the first micro-finance bank in the country, was his brainchild and set up under his leadership.
Panta also served as the Deputy Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank of the country.
His contribution to poverty alleviation by promoting the access of the poor to financial services is well-recognised.
