Biratnagar, Sept. 9: Biratnagar remained tensed today as the banda enforcers clashed with police. No causality is reported so far.
Police opened fire in the air and lobbed teargas shells in the clash ensued after cadres of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) vandalised a police check post near the Nepal-India border in Morang at around 9 am today and hurled stones at police.
The UDMF has been agitating in the Terai districts for more than three weeks, putting forth various demands.
Police said that they had to open 16 rounds of fires in the air to take the situation under control. The District Police Office (DPO) said that police shot some rounds of teargas shells as well.
Meanwhile, journalists Jitendra Thakur and Nabin Karna are reported to have been assaulted by the agitators in Biratnagar-21. Karna’s motorcycle was also torched in the incident.
Karna affiliated with Biratnagar-based Makalu Television and Thakur, who works with Gorkhapatra Daily, were said to be heading to collect news reports when the incident occurred.
Police said that a large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area to avert any untoward incidents.
