Chautara, Aug 30: The vast majority of the drinking water sources and tap water in Sindhupalchowk district have been confirmed with coliform bacteria, which is commonly visible in human excreta.
The lab test conducted by a technical team of Tuki Sang Sunkoshi demonstrated specimens collected from 111 water sources out of 227 in 28 VDCs of the district contained coliform bacteria that can cause diarrhea and vomiting.
Of the samples tested, in drinking water sources and tape water coliform bacteria were confirmed being used by the locals of district headquarters Chautara, said Sanitation Officer of Sangh-implemented SUHARA Project, Binita Adhikari.
The consumption of contaminated drinking water can cause life-threatening cholera and jaundice so that users have been sensitized to pay attention on sanitary behaviours, Adhikari added.
The coliform testing campaign would be expanded in remaining 47 among total 75 VDCs of the district next year, said the project sources. The lab test, which was carried out once a year in the district earlier, has been doubled after samples of water collected from different parts were confirmed with cloriform bacteria.
