Court verdict on huge land scam out, 12 sent to jail with fine of Rs 21 million each

Bhaktapur, 31 October 2014: The District Court Bhaktapur, has, giving its verdict on a big land scam in the district, sent 12 people among 23 accused to prison along with fines of Rs 21 million each.

A total of 23 people had been arrested by a special police squad on July 31, 2012 on the charge of their involvement in a huge land scam. They were about to sell 3 ropani and six anna land at Madhyapur Thimi Municipality16 owned by  to Biramananda Agrawal of Indrachowk, Kathmandu-25 at Rs 162 million through forgery.

Land Revenue Office, Bhaktapur’s employee Karna Bahadur Bista from Sijuwa VDC-9 in Morang is among those convicted in the scam, court registrar Khadgaraj Adhikari said. He was sentenced to three years in prison along with fine. He was awarded additional years in jail for his involvement in the fraud in respective of his capacity as a government employee.

A bench of court judge Lekhnath Dhakal issued a verdict to this end Thursday.

Others convicted are Abhay Chandra Ranjit, the then ward Secretary of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality-16, Bishwaram Suwal of Bhaktapur Municipality-11, Anil Hekka of Lokanthali, Madhyapur Thimi, Dhana Krishna Bhasima of Madhyapur Thimi-8 and Deepak Kyal of Kathmandu were condemned to one year in prison along with fine.

However, Rohit Jung Rana of Buddhanagar, Kathmandu-10, and Raju Lama of Lokanthali, Madhyapur Thimi-16, convicted by the court on the scam are on the large.

Likewise, Tanka Bahadur Budhathoki from Jyamdi-9 Kavre, Balkrishna Singh from Hariwan-6, Sarlahi, Bhim Prasad Poudel from Hariya-7, Udaypur and Dinesh Aryal from Barhabise-2, Sindhupalchowk have been slapped one year jail sentence along with fine of Rs 50,000 each.

Among the accused in the scam, Rajan Kumar Shrestha, Shankar Bhattarai, Subodh Kumar Dahal, Anup Chalise, Dil Gopal Shrestha, Leelamani Bhattarai, Umakanta Poudel, Ramhari Neupane and Hari Binod Chaulagai have got clean chits.

During investigations, it was found that the gang received Rs 2.5 million in advance for the sale of land and  Land Revenue Office Employee was promised Rs 2.5 million just for replacing the photo of real land owner with fake one and had received Rs 500,000 in advance.
