Development Committee tells govt to keep relief goods on standby

Kathmandu, July 31, 2016: The Development Committee of Parliament directed the government to ensure proper management of damage likely to be caused by natural disasters and  to keep necessary relief materials ready in appropriate places.

The Committee has ordered the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to keep bulldozers, excavators, and bailey bridges on standby for mobilisation and to urgently manage the damage which could be caused by landslides and floods.

The Committee also instructed the government to manage basic needs for the displaced families by collecting proper data about condition of flood and landslide victims.

Likewise, the panel has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to initiate programmes to create effective medium to flow precautionary information regarding natural disaster risks. Further, it has also directed the concerned bodies to move the families of risky areas to safer places.

The committee also ordered Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development to reconstruct highways and other roads, roads connecting headquarters and VDCs and bridges damaged by incessant rainfall.

The Committee meeting presided over by the its Chairman Rabindra Adhikari on Sunday held discussions about effects of natural disasters and the progress on relief and rescue activities with related officers.

Secretaries of different ministries including Chief Secretary Somlal Subedi had informed the meeting about progress in rescue and relief activities initiated by the government.
