District Jail, Rajbiraj, faces shortage of daily essentials

Saptari, Sept 30: The district jail in Rajbiraj has been facing shortage of daily essentials due to continuous Tarai banda or general strike for the past 46 days called by the United Democratic Madhesi Front protesting the delineation of federal states and new constitution.

There is shortage of rice, vegetables, pulses, salt, among others in the jail after the UDMF blocked Kunoli, and Mahadevmath border check points as well as the Sunsari-based Koshi barrage customs check point.

Jailer Krishna Bahadur Dahal said that they have been facing problem to provide meal to the prisoners from the amount sent by the government as the price of daily essentials has doubled due to the continuous banda.

There are now 278 prisoners including 20 women in the jail, which has the capacity to accommodate 125 prisoners.

Meanwhile, the prisoners have started suffering from different diseases including diarrhoea, typhoid, among others due to the increasing heat in Tarai.
