Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) education represents society’s efforts to teach its current and emerging citizens how to apply valuable skills around computing and communications devices to classroom environments. UNESCO’s comprehensive approach to promoting ICT in education comes at a time when Nepal is moving to advance education through multiple platforms.

Kathmandu, May 17, 2016: Within the framework of the newly developed teachers’ competency standards, UNESCO and the National Campaign for Educational Development (NCED) recently organized a “Workshop on Developing Web-based Science Material for Science Teachers and Trainers of Nepal”. The initiative aimed at supporting the development of a web-based self-learning portal for teachers.

A total of 17 participants including experts, education professionals, trainers and teachers, participated in the workshop and prepared a number of web-based materials to teach and learn a variety of science subjects.

“I am confident that the development of web-based materials will help support the government in its endeavor to enhance ICT-based learning in Nepalese schools,” said Bishwa Prakash Pandit, Secretary at the Ministry of Education.

Workshop participants were divided into groups, and each group worked on developing different sets of self-learning materials for physics, chemistry, biology, environmental studies, geology and astronomy. On the final day of the workshop, each group presented and discussed their respective projects. “The materials developed during the workshop will be digitalized and used during the in-service teacher development training programmes,” said the press release by UNESCO after the programme.

UNESCO has been supporting the National Center for Educational Development (NCED) to integrate ICT into teacher development programmes in Nepal as part of the regional project “Supporting Competency-Based Teacher Training Reforms to facilitate Effective ICT-Pedagogy Integration” funded by the Korea Funds-In-Trust (KFIT).
