Kathmandu, August 28, 2018: Government is urged to introduce the special education for children with autism.  Parents of the children who are suffering from autism spectrum disorder are asking for such programmes.

A parent Shekhar Dhakal says, “There are hundreds of children suffering from autism and are deprived of education. Also, the private schools do not enrol such children. The government has not addressed them yet but we want the government to introduce special education for such children.” There is no proper equipped and special centres for the proper care, education and treatment for children with autism as they are challenged with the social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication. Autism is all about the impairment, delay functioning of central nervous system maturation, speech disorder, language problem, scholastic skill disorder, behavioural and intellectual disorder, sleep dysfunction, seizures, gastrointestinal distress along with other unique conditions differing within individuals.

Chairperson of Autism Care Nepal Society, Dr. Sunita Maleku Amatya said, “There is an estimation of around a hundred thousand of people suffering from autism in Nepal.” Mayor Bidhya Sunder Shakya spoke in an interactive program mentioned that government is looking forward to establishing the special centres for children with the special disorder. Kathmandu Metropolitan City is introducing an identity card for special children. KMC is also planning for scholarships to such children for their normal education focusing on proper education and health for children with such disorder.
