Chitwan, Oct 31,2014: The 8th Special Olympic Athletics National Sports Competition kicked off on Friday at Camp Chaur in Narayangadh.
Inaugurating the competition organized by Mentally Retarded Welfare Association Nepal- Chitwan Chapter, Minister for Health and Population Khagraj Adhikari said the government was committed to working in the interest of differently-able children.
Minister Adhikari said the government was preparing to bring out an action plan to provide free education to differently able children.
Differently able are still discriminated in the society, he added while urging for a change in such attitude.
A total of 25 groups from 12 districts are taking part in the event.
The competition will host a number of athletics games as 50, 100, 200 meter races, long jump, shot-put, including others, informed Pawan Kumar Piya, Chairman of the Chitwan Chapter of the Association.
Athletes are playing under the age categories of eight to 11, 12 to 15, 21 to 22 and 22 to 29. The participants are mentally retarded.
The best performing players in the competition will be given a chance to play in the International Special Olympics to be held in the US in 2015. The competition which will be played until Saturday is being participated by 162 athletes.
