Elephant festival from Monday

Kathmandu, December 21, 2016: Sauraha is hosting the 13th Chitwan elephant festival from Monday, with elephant beauty contest and events targeting domestic and foreign tourists.

The five-day event will showcase elephant walk, elephant polo, elephant calf football, elephant beauty contest, elephant picnic, and elephant painting.

At a press conference held here on Tuesday, Regional Hotel Association Nepal, the organiser of the event, underscored the positive impacts the festival could bring upon the tourism business.

Keshav Pandey, media coordinator for the event, said festival will exhibit human-wildlife relations rather than mere amusement.

The organisers said they also want to welcome animal rights activists to the event and ask them to point out any mistreatment with animals throughout the festival.

The elephant festival will also have a media centre with free Wi-Fi facility for ease of media professionals helping spread words about the event.
