Kathmandu, March 1: It’s full of fat, but the good kind of fat. For the first time tasters, the bright green buttery fruit is rather grassy but it could be improvised into various savoury recipes and its distinctive subtle yet complex flavour could be appreciated. Avocado is one of the most underrated fruits in Nepal. Except for a dozen of markets, avocado hasn’t been widely and cheaply available everywhere. Though not everyone here has been lathering it on their toasts but it has been gaining popularity lately. Nepal has in fact proved to have a very favourable climate for avocado farming and many farmers have been growing avocadoes in their organic farms. And the public seem to have been wandering around even in those few said markets.
Avocado is one of the healthiest fruits there can be.  It is very nutritious and contains a wide variety of nutrients, including 20 different vitamins and minerals and it does not contain any cholesterol or sodium, and are low in saturated fat. Avocados and avocado oil are high in monounsaturated oleic acid, a fatty acid that is believed to be one of the main reasons for the health benefits of olive oil and various studies have shown that eating avocado can reduce the risk of heart diseases and maybe cancer. It’s a pity it is still not getting enough hype as it should in Nepal but slowly it has been making its way into our markets and taste buds.
Due to its numerous health benefits or popularity in the western media or just because of curiosity as it a new kind of exotic fruit to us, Nepal has been very welcoming to avocadoes over the few years. And here’s a little fun fact: the origin of the word avocado comes from Spanish explorers could not pronounce the Aztec word for avocado, “ahuacatl,†so they called the avocado “aguacate.†At the end of the day, avocado is a remarkable fruit full of nutrients and very versatile. Just throw it in your salad or put it on toast or make the famous yet incredibly simple guacamole, the options are endless as is its health benefits.
