Filmy Friday: ‘Hawaizaada’, ‘Khamoshiyan’, ‘Birdman’, ‘Foxcatcher’ Release Today

‘Hawaizaada’, set in Mumbai of 1895, is based on the life of scientist Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, who is credited to have constructed India’s first unmanned plane. The movie stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Sharda in pivotal roles. Since it has not been promoted on a very large scale and the mainstay lies in the sincerity of the subject, the Box Office collections would depend on the word of mouth.

‘Khamoshiyan’, on the other hand, is an erotic love triangle revolving around a writer adrift in the icy slopes of Kashmir where he discovers a woman with a strange, silent past. Starring Ali Fazal as the troubled writer, debutants Gurmeet Choudhary and Sapna Pabbi, the movie is directed by Karan Darra and produced by Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt in association with Vishesh Films. The promos and the music of the movie have managed to grab eyeballs. The movie can open well, but a lot will depend on how people take it.

‘Rahasya’ is an interesting suspense thriller starring Tisca Chopra, Ashish Vidyarthi and Kay Kay Menon, but hasn’t been promoted at all.

Two big Hollywood movies too release this Friday – ‘Birdman’ and ‘Foxcatcher’. While ‘Birdman’ revolves around a faded Hollywood actor famous for his superhero role struggling to mount a Broadway adaptation of a Raymond Carver story, played by Michael Keaton, ‘Foxcatcher’ is is loosely based on the true events and eventually tragic results surrounding multimillionaire du Pont family heir and wrestling enthusiast John E. du Pont’s efforts in hiring the 1984 Olympic champion brothers Mark and Dave Schultz to help train US wrestling Olympians as told by Mark in his autobiography, “Foxcatcher: The True Story of My Brother’s Murder, John du Pont’s Madness, and the Quest for Olympic Gold”.

It remains to be seen which movie wins the race at the Box Office this weekend, as it is not just the clash of titans but the clash of genres.
