Kathmandu, 7th Sept, Balaju resident Ms. Sumana Dawadi is a fighter , a real hero fighting against sexual harassment that women in Nepal face every day. “Whether it be a public vehicle, or a classroom, some hooligans just need a chance. At the time when society is moving very fast and Nepali women are trying to be independent, stuffs like harassment become turbulences of their path” Samana shares. The daily violence that girls face in crowded vehicles while going to offices and schools make them difficult to walk their daily life. It pulls them low. Samana is saddened more by the fact that all these things happen in kathmandu valley, the Capital City of the country where majority of people are educated. These all made her apply in the program Village to Raise a Child ; a program of Harvard University. Sumana is up in this competition with her campaign called ” Essence To Flower” which is a campaign against Sexual harassment.
Harvard’s this youth program calls for the young innovative ideas that can bring change in the society with small efforts. And Sumana applies in this with a hope to get selected and act upon to eliminate sexual harassments that take place in public vehicles and our society. The selection process is going on and Sumana is in tough competition with competitors outside the country. She wants more votes and supports from people to win this competition. And just 3 days are left for the competition to get over.
As correctly said by someone, you just need to wish and it will be fulfilled. Sumana from her very early age wanted to raise her voice and take action against the sexual harassments that women have to tackle in different spares of life and there she got this opportunity – the Youth Summit platform provided by Harvard University. Now she desperately wants to win this competition because she wants to see the country of fearless, confident girls. She wants to do this for girls of coming generation as well. She is against harassment of all gender.
She mentions her own sufferings also as the reason behind incubation of this campaign. And her family supports her to the fullest in this. Not only them, there are hundreds of youths who are there to support her in this campaign. They are her co-volunteer friends at SHIKSHA NEPAL, SEE NEPAL and GENNEP. But she started as a one man army at first.
She strongly believes the women who are suffering from this problem themselves should fight back and fight right when the incident happens. She is less hopeful about the help that police officers do but she is optimistic that if all youths unite together and pressurize the government, they will listen. She also dreams of starting courses in schools which will teach students the importance of raising voice against such harassments and techniques to tackle such problems.
With full support to the current women seat reservation system she says, all the old man that get into the bus are not only the responsibility of girls. They can be given all other seats as well except those few restricted ones. And, girls for sure will be ready to leave their seats for elderly people if needed.
