Glocal Khabar: Can you share about your journey as Top 6 Finalist. How was the feeling to become the Winner of GTH 2019? What do you recall the most?

Samir: So basically, I am from Morang and I got to know about Glocal Teen Hero from the page Glocal Teen Hero. I applied for Glocal Teen Hero 2019 and I came to Kathmandu upon being called as I was selected as top 6 Finalist after being selected as Glocal’s 20 under 20. The selection in 20 under 20 was already a big thing for me and when I got selected as one of the finalists out of six, it made me really happy, excited and also thrilled at the same time. It was beyond my expectation. Training, corporate visits, workshops were some of the things which I recall the most because it has helped me a lot to learn and develop myself.

I have got a lot to share about my journey as a Top 6 Finalist. We got the opportunity to know each other in a weeklong residential training. Some of the learnings were aspects of good leadership through leadership session by Mr. Ajay Pandey. Likewise, the best part for me was upon visiting Wai Wai Factory and understanding about the manufacture of the noodles. We all were amazed to see the management, the resources and huge manpower working to create the brand “Wai Wai.” That was an extraordinary thing to see. The visit to the Umbrella Association of all the Youth Organization i.e. Ayon was also very effective. We got to understand about the inclusiveness and the importance of Youth in the Government, likewise, there was sharing session about law and its importance too. That was a new thing for us to know. The workshops that were given to us, helped us to grow somewhat and develop confidence as well. I also recall the time we visited the Coke Factory and saw the manufacture so near to our eyes. We also went to E-Sewa, the software company and got different insights from there.

Something, I really found the best part of the training was meeting Mr. Nirvana Chaudhary. He was so humble and he also heard our stories and gave inspirational words that I will always treasure for the rest of my life. In addition to this, I also liked the session given by Mr. Abdullah from Turkish Airlines and Mr. Asish Thakur from Glocal Pvt. Ltd. were encouraging to develop the determination to work hard in the days to come. We also learned about teamwork, leadership in YUWA. Meeting such wonderful personalities, I now have an aim to work hard and turn my dream into a reality.

Firstly, all top 6 Finalists were good in their own field. I had made up my mind to accept whatever result would come. On one hand, Asish sir was making the exciting environment before revealing the result, and I had my heartbeat growing faster and faster. “Glocal Teen Hero 2019 goes to Samir Phuyal”- When I close my eyes, It still gives me so much thrill. But yes, I was more than happy and with the title, I feel my responsibility has grown and I need to make it a huge achievement constantly working on my dream project. So, when I am already the winner, I am always grateful to each one of them, who guided me on this journey, and I am mostly grateful to Glocal Pvt. Ltd. for providing such wonderful platform for teenagers like us.

Glocal Khabar: How did your journey as an Entrepreneur and Tech Enthusiast start? What kind of challenges did you face on your way?

Samir: First of all, I started with the computer world. We used to have computer studies from class 6 and I was very interested in that subject. I remember we were reading about the Microsoft Word and suddenly I had a question in my mind about who made Microsoft? I questioned my teacher and he gave me the answer- “Bill Gates”. Next day, I again asked my teacher how he made it. And the teacher just said Programming without explaining what it actually is. I explored my computer book and I saw the last chapter to be “Q-Basic Programming.” I was so happy because I thought our teacher would teach us that chapter. But since the exam was near, that chapter was skipped and this made me unhappy. However, I was interested in it so I started studying myself about “Programming” and that is how I learned the basic programming.

I was keen on computer and my father connected internet in Home. Through that, I was able to explore the world of programming and coding and started learning and practicing through the internet. Slowly and gradually, I learned about how to create Websites? How to create Mobile apps? And many more. I learned about web development and I got to understand the importance of Internet.

Ever since I was exposed to the world of coding, I have been passionate about it. After learning how to code, I taught myself programming languages which are crucial for every tech enthusiast. After learning programming languages which made me think I can use this knowledge for something better and useful to people. After some tinkering, I successfully created an advertising platform called ‘Naya Kinmel’, a platform which digitalizes advertisements and connects buyers and sellers making their shopping experience easier. Through this online market space, local people can post advertisements of their items they want to sell and reach the buyers quickly. I am also running ‘HamroTech’ YouTube channel which teaches web development and programming in Nepali Language.

I also created online courses for students who were struggling for studies. I had to go coaching classes and after I started my work to create online courses, I even missed my class. I was focused on my work and it nearly took me 3 months to complete my course. However, I plan to create many courses in the near future.

Talking about the challenges, Time management is one of its kind. As a +2 student of science, I had difficulty managing time, balancing studies with my work. I am passionate about web development and want to invest more time on it but I have been able to because of my academic priorities.

Glocal Khabar: What is your plan after GTH 2019? What will you be working on?

Samir: Academically, I want to pursue my interests as a major in Information Technology (IT). I want to continue web development and developing online web pages which can help people. I also want to create more online courses in the days to come to help the students through Udemy. Likewise, I am planning to open a web development agency. Along with this, I also want to develop a comprehensive course to teach the beginners and the teenagers about programming in Nepali language for free. And I will continue online marketing work as it is.

Glocal Khabar: What does the word ‘achievement’ mean for you?

Samir: If a lot of people will be benefitted by using the apps, the websites and the online platforms I create, then it will be a great achievement for me.

Glocal Khabar: What message you would like to deliver to the youth?

Samir: I always suggest youth to do what they love. We should also understand the value of time and learn time management skills. Don’t wait until you complete your studies to follow your passion. If possible, take it side by side and the most important thing is make the use of Social Networking Sites wisely. Internet has lots of platforms to explore the things you love doing. So, use internet not just for Facebook, Twitter or Games, but use it for something productive that will help you.
