April 9, 2015: After the mobile version, Facebook has launched messenger for the web. The English speakers can start using the service by going on Messenger.com. In the coming weeks, even more languages are expected to be added in the web messenger.

It is a standalone messaging platform just like the mobile version that is without the News Feed and other distractions.

Changes to Messenger were addressed in March at F8, Facebook’s conference for software developers.  The CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg stated the social network would be opening up Messenger to third-party apps in that event.

Facebook once attempted to create Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Firefox back in 2012 but both of the apps were discontinued eventually.
