Birgunj,17 Dec 2014: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Distribution Centre, Birgunj, arrested 11 people red-handed this morning from Udayapurghurmi and Harpatgunj in the district while they were trying to hook the electricity line directly.

In a bid to curb the electricity leakage, the NEA arrested them with support from the security personnel.

Mahantha Shah, Kisannath Patel, Sandeep Saha, Kashi Raut were arrested from Udayapurghurmi while Rambabu Ram, Nirashan Thakur, Rajesh Raya, Birendra Yadav, Deepnarayan Kurm and Jay Ram Prasad Kurmi from Harpatgunj. The NEA said that the accused have been fined Rs 116,358.

The security personnel also confiscated four television sets and a CD player from them.

“We have launched a drive against the electricity theft,” Chief Engineer at the Centre Rishi Kumar Barnawal said.

Barnawal added that the Centre has also launched the awareness campaign and has started taking legal actions against the culprits to control the electricity theft.

It is imperative that the public also should support the cause and collaborate with the officials to lessen such crime, Barnawal argued.
