Kathmandu, August 2, 2017: Acid attack survivor Sangita Magar has received financial assistance to support her education.

The Direction, a non-government organization, provided her with the assistance as part of its women empowerment project. Shivam Agrawal, Founder and Chairperson of the organization, handed her a cheque amounting 10,000 rupees.

The organization had collected the fund from a fund-raising program recently organized at The Victory Lounge, Durbarmarg.

Sangita, along with her friend Sima Basnet, were attacked with acid on February 22, 2015 at a tuition center in Basantapur while preparing for SLC. Four masked men had barged into the room and splashed acid on her face.

Magar is a permanent resident of Khaniyapani in Ramechhap district.

Despite the heinous attack, she appeared in SLC and passed the exam.

Currently a +2 level student, Sangita has become a role-model for girls and young women that despite whatever fatal episode you go through in your life, you can’t lose hope, instead should pursue your goal with determination.

The Direction, established in 2016 December, has been working on women empowerment, youth empowerment, health sector, education sector, uneducated skills empowerment, care and distribution.

The organization had earlier conducted a leadership camp for youths, and a Blood Donation Program at Jama Masjid, Bagbazar. “Currently, we have started a stationery campaign for orphanage students, and will be providing books, copies, pen, pencil and extra stuffs like bags, shoes, and uniforms to them. We are also working on a national level Menstrual Guidance Training to empower women all across Nepal along with the free distribution of Sanitary Pads,” shared the organization’s chairperson Shivam Agrawal.
