Kathmandu, August 17, 2017: In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Nepal, the Fulbright Commission (USEF) in Nepal is organizing a lecture and policy discussion event each month in 2017.

The lecture series brings together the alumni of various U.S. exchange programs and other Nepal experts to examine issues of importance to both countries.

The events are open to the public.

About the first lecture series:

Rural entrepreneurship in Nepal: Opportunities and Challenges

Still mostly a rural agricultural nation, Nepal’s future prosperity depends in many ways on creating economic opportunities in its villages and small towns. Nepal’s rural residents have always struggled to improve their economic position, and often show surprising resilience and creativity. Now more than ever there are new opportunities to do so, despite the daunting challenges. A new sense of possibility comes from many factors: greater awareness, better skills, spreading commercial businesses, new technologies, a growing network of electricity and roads, the relative youthfulness of Nepali society, new social mobility for women and marginalized groups, as well as employment experiences and small-scale capital accumulation from working overseas. Come join this dynamic and experienced set of speakers discuss the entrepreneurship landscape in rural Nepal.

Speakers:

Dr. Man Bahadur Bishwakarma, Fulbright Post Doc, Joint Secretary, TU Adjunct Professor

Dr. Sumitra Manandhar Gurung, CEO, Mahila Sahayatra Microfinance Bittiya Sanstha Ltd
