Kathmandu, April 4, 2017: Week three of the Mahila Premier League (MPL) saw the highest number of goals scored so far – 46. This took the total goals scored to 126 goals over the three weeks of the MPL. GoSports Nepal kept their position on the top the league table, adding another 16 goals to bring their impressive total up to 54 goals, with Laxmi Tamang (20 goals), Muna Tamang (16 goals) and Suvadra Khadka (11 goals) being the main contenders for the golden boot.

Meanwhile, the second position team Real Madrid is keeping the pressure on the leaders with another win to remain equal on points. Team Leeyash moved into 3rd position only two points behind the leaders, rebounding after a difficult loss against GoSports Nepal in Week 2. Akriti Rai carried Team Leeyash to their second straight victory in style with a back heel goal. Leeyash striker Jannie Kwok added to the momentum by scoring five goals in her first appearance in the MPL, giving the Goal Diggers something to think about for their upcoming game on Saturday. Apex girls will be looking for a victory against 5th placed ABC Girls to move up from the last position.

Nepal’s first women’s futsal league, MPL is a fully women-run initiative: organized by women, played by women, and refereed by women. Over the course of eight weeks, eight teams will compete for the title of Kathmandu’s best women’s futsal team in order to promote a culture of competition, camaraderie, and collaboration in Nepali women’s futsal.

The top three teams at the end of the League will be awarded experiential team prizes, like rafting trips and rock climbing sessions. In support of The WE United Project’s mission to empower women and girls in Nepal through dynamic sport-based activities, the tournament provides space for women players to interact with one another, develop skills on and off the field, and build a supportive network for women involvement in sport.

The next Mahila Premier League games start at 10:30 am at Grassroots Recreation Center on April 8th. Friends, family, and fans can join and support the women’s futsal league.

The league is supported by the European Union in Nepal, HamroKitchen.com, the Last Resort, and Grassroots Recreational Center.
