Kathmandu, April 27, 2017: Minister for Information and Communications Surendra Kumar Karki has insisted on the need of increasing women’s access to information and communication technology (ICT) sector.

Addressing a programme organized on the occasion of ‘International Girls in ICT Day- 2017’ by Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) on Thursday, Karki, who is also the government spokesperson, said women’s participation and access to the entire ICT sector in Nepal was far less and should be increased.

“Women’s holistic development would be very difficult until their access to intellectual property is guaranteed,” he said, urging women community to take self-initiation in this regard. Rural people should be well informed on why and how to use internet service, he asserted.

Also speaking on the occasion, National Women Commission Acting Chairperson Bhagawati Ghimire spoke the need of making equal participation of women in every state apparatus mandatory for the overall development of women.

NTA Chairman Digambar Jha informed the program that preparations were on to connect every school, health facility and rural municipality in rural areas with the internet service.
