Looking at the quality of many of the bottled water in town no better than the dirt-water, a person felt the necessity to have a trusted and reliable brand of bottled water in Nepal. And, after an extensive study of more than two years in the sector, he finally kick-started the business of natural spring bottled water that is now selling like hot cakes in the town.

The person is none other than Mr. Pawan Chitrakar, the CEO and Chairman of Ma-Paani.

His team, after the vigorous study for 2 long years about the quality of water, shape and size of PET bottles and the market for bottled waters in Nepal, launched the product in its current shape this August 1 itself.

And, as the water is quality assured, tested and certified with HACCP Standard, and the only HACCP Certified Drinking water company in Nepal; Ma-Paani seeks to revive the true essence of water: safe and healthy, pure, nutritious and thirst satisfying.

The factory located in Chandragiri in Kathmandu has since then been producing bottled water with a capacity of than 2400 bottles per hour.

At a time when dozens of bottled water brands are already existing in the market, Ma-Paani seeks to stand out in the crowd with its name, brand theme and shape of the bottle.

Through Ma-Paani, they want to spread the awareness that pure drinking water is extremely important in our life. Talking about the visualization of the bottle, the red color, Chitrakar says that the color Red-Mud represents the Nepali culture and purity. “As the red-mud denotes purity in our culture, and has been used for purifying our homes and in most of the cultural occasions, through the use of the same color for the brand, Ma-Paani seeks to ensure the people that it is pure,” says Chitrakar.

At a time when there is a price war in the segment of bottled drinking water, they are following a different path i.e. quality first.

As more than 95% of communicable diseases are caused because of unhealthy water, they want to change the scenario. The producers of Ma-Paani want to make people aware that it’s better to pay some higher amount for quality and safe water than ending up spending very high amount of money going to cure such diseases.

Ma-Paani

Now, just into the third week from launch, the water has already good share in the market as the tables of many restaurants in the town are decorated with Ma-Paani bottles. And, the brand has been the new scene in different marts. The water is now mostly used by hotels, high-end restaurants, and banks, etc. Furthermore, it is also supplied to many hospitals.

“Most of the time, you can choose only one option from the two: quality or a price. Quality always comes with a price,” says Chitrakar on the higher price of the bottled-water compared to other brands. “If you want quality assurance, you shouldn’t hesitate to pay higher prices. We couldn’t compromise on the quality of the product, thus resulting in somehow higher price,” he adds.

Giving message to the emerging entrepreneurs in the nation, Chitrakar says, “If your product is good, it will find its niche market for sure, giving you the recognition.” He further shared that it’s always better to opt for customer satisfaction through the quality products, not by lowering the price at the cost of quality. “Everything will come into place if you have a quality product. People will surely notice you if you stand out of the crowd and opt for quality.”

Chitrakar expresses happiness at seeing the rising demands of the bottled water in the market and also the demands from new places like Bhaktapur, Patan, and Bouddha. He also shared that Ma-Paani will soon be marketed in Pokhara. And, in the near future, they also have a BIG plan: to export the water outside Nepal, for the quality it offers.

Subheccha Khadka, marketing executive for the brand says, soon they are coming up with bottles in various different sizes, from 500ml to 20 liters of jar.

The company has also already thought about the CSR part of the business, and plan to build drinking water taps in public schools from a certain amount from the profit, or construct Dhungedharas, or provide some funds to the Rato Machhindranath Jaatra Celebration or any other works related to drinking water.

May the mission get accomplished!
