Kathmandu, February 4, 2018: The scientists of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) have started DNA test of plants found only in Nepal through the test in flowers, leaves, and peels.

Dr.Ram Chandra Paudel, a scientist from NAST mentioned that the DNA test in the plants would be done on the basis of the genetic characteristics of the plants. According to Dr.Paudel, the plants are first tested in labs and the characters found in them are cross verified with the characters of the plants found in the record. The plants with the highest number of similar characters can be categorized as the same botanical properties.

Paudel said, “This shall help preserve the endangered species in the long run. This would be stopped only if we could identify the smuggled plants and those collected unsystematically.”He further mentioned that the DNA tests would help make policy for sustainable use of the plants. Different countries have already maintained the details of the plants along with their species in the record.

At present, the DNA test of endangered species and other plants found only in Nepal is being carried out. Each plant is given a new code which has no prior records. The government has enlisted 22 plants endangered plant species.
