Nepali cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane becomes the first Nepali to get selected in the Indian Premier League

Kathmandu, January 30, 2018: On January 28 Sandeep Lamichhane graced one of the most significant contributions in the field of Nepali cricket. Nepal’s spin bowling persona, Sandeep has become the first Nepali cricketer to be selected in Indian Premier League (IPL). He will be representing the team Delhi Daredevils for the upcoming season. In an auction of players held at the second day in Banglore, Delhi Daredevils spent INR 20 lakh ($310,00) to list Sandeep in their squad.

Lamichhane had made it to the final auction pool of 581 players from among the 1,122 cricketers. Currently, he is with the Nepali team in the UAE preparing for the Division Two of the World Cricket League in Namibia.

Only 17, Sandeep has a bagful of experience collected from the domestic matches of the country and this experience might not be a hurdle for him in front of the voluminous audience mass of IPL. Recently, Sandeep had taken 9 wickets in seven matches in the Everest Premier League and 12 wickets in nine matches for Nepal during the WCL Championship. The official twitter handle of IPL has introduced Lamichhane as ‘Nepali Shane Warne’.

Sandeep first caught notable attention for his outstanding performance the 2016 Under-19 World Cup where he bagged five wickets that included a hat-trick against Ireland. Michael Clarke, former Australian captain had words full of appreciation for Sandeep’s potentials in the gameplay. Clarke had contended, “Sandeep has a lot of potentials and is extremely passionate about the game.” It has been surmised that Clarke’s belief and bond with Sandeep led Daredevils coach Ricky Ponting to select Sandeep for the IPL.
