Plans for Betterment in Telecommunications: Theme of this year’s SATRC meeting

Kathmandu, 20 December 2017: South Asia Telecommunications Regulators’ Council SATRC has commenced its eighteenth meeting on Tuesday in the capital.

The meet includes the representative of South Asian countries along with Nepal which has been elected as the chair of the Council in the meeting. The three- day meeting will be organized under the coordination of Nepal Telecommunications Authority. The conference will also discuss on how to fulfill Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 through the medium of telecommunications, information, technology, and digital structure. Also, it plans to move ahead by reviewing the progress made in the sector of telecommunications regulation in recent periods in these countries.

Mohan Bahadur Basnet, Minister for Information and Communications stressed upon the hurdles regarding the efficient regulation of newly developed technologies in the sector of telecommunications. “Nepal has now moved ahead towards the journey of economic prosperity by ending political transition after holding three elections. Development of telecommunication is vital and the government should expand its plans and programs,” Basnet asserted.

Communications Secretary Kedar Bahadur Adhikari mentioned about the need of joining hands to launch of 5G services in the telecommunication sector. He also highlighted to make the proper regulation of new technologies and restraint in the ongoing cybercrimes in the country.

“Both—technical and legal sides should be made strong to regulate telecom sector.” Chairperson of Nepal Telecom Authority, Digamber Jha underscored the importance regarding the current necessity for the development of telecommunications in Nepal.

In order to regulate the telecommunications of South Asia, the conference has planned to prepare and promulgate promising plans for the betterment of telecommunication.
