Jhapa, 29 December, 2017: A twelve-year-old Ashika Rajbashi of Panchgachhi in Jhapa’s Shivsatakshi Municipality-9 has built a toilet in her home.

According to The Himalayan News Services, after the open defecation free campaign was launched in her area, she started thinking of building a latrine in her own home. The sixth-grader at Jana Adarsha Secondary School at Shivgunj lives in a squatter settlement and her family’s meager condition couldn’t facilitate themselves with a latrine.

“When my neighbors started constructing their toilets, I simply dreamed of having one for my family as well. But as a child I had neither money nor strength to build a toilet,” she said.

She built the latrine with the help of some elders in the neighborhood. She asked them to dig a pit for her while she fetched sand from a stream nearby. She was extremely happy after the completion of her work. “The toilet was finally built with the support of villagers”, a delighted Ashika said.
