Opportunity Optimization: A challenge to maximize resource
Kathmandu, June 29, 2017: On 24th June, young changemakers of EmpowHER gathered at the Ujjyalo Foundation, Lazimpat for the eighth session of the 4-months-long journey. This new session of EmpowHER 2017 was about going to the real world and addressing the real problems of the targeted people of each project.
The session kicked off with an energizer ‘Bang-Bang’ which boosted the energy level and prepared participants for the day.
Following the energizer, a session was conducted by Big Sister- Ms. Barsha Rani Gurung, a change maker of 2016. Ms. Gurung emphasized on passion over the project. She recalled her experience and said that, had she not been passionate, she would not have been motivated to take her project forward despite all the ups and downs. “So, one needs to know about the value carried by their project and their own value and then, associate them together to take it forward,” she shared. She also highlighted some professional etiquettes necessary for us to develop as an entrepreneur.
Next session was conducted by Ms. Amuda Mishra about ‘Mastering the Elevator Pitch’. On the session, she highlighted the necessity to be clear on what is to be said while pitching an idea, without sounding boring, being prepared and responsive. “You are not a talking brochure,” she emphasized, “Have a relaxed and comfortable setting and use everyday language.” She also mentioned that one should not directly start selling, instead, start by building a network.
After the theoretical session, all changemakers went out to sell the products, in 6 different groups. Menstrual Pads were sold openly as an awareness ‘Pads are not Bad’ campaign against selling pads wrapped up in a newspaper when buying. Handmade emoji pillow was sold promoting Nepalese products. Lighting jars, envelopes, and necklaces were also handmade products made by changemakers themselves.
Post event evaluation was done after everyone was back to the office. On the session, the girls learned about rapid prototyping, sales pitching, productive outcomes, creative way of influencing, etc. Beside this, the change makers were able to learn the value of money and how a small amount can make generate revenue when added value.
The session concluded with sharing reflections from all participants and feedback from facilitators.
