Zonta VidhuShe, first ever Women’s International Debating Championship in Nepal commences on May 17

Kathmandu, May 16, 2017: ‘Zonta VidhuShe’, the first ever Women’s International Debating Championship in Nepal is set to be organized from 17th to 20th May 2017 at NAMI College, Jorpati, Kathmandu by proactive female debate community members as part of the annual plan of Debate Network Nepal (DNN).

“Zonta VidhuShe has been brought forth as an attempt to provide a sustainable platform to celebrate and appreciate womanhood in debating community via a tournament by and for women to advocate for issues and policies regarding women,” says DNN in a statement.

DNN is the nation’s leading debate body also serving as Nepal’s national debate organization that works to institutionalize debating culture in Nepal.

Through the four days long tournament that includes training, group stage, knockout rounds, grand finale and award ceremony; the participants and organizers are committed to the cause of women and the espousing of values concerning their liberties and freedoms.

Around 30 teams from Nepal and abroad have registered for the grand event. Each team comprises of two members and will be debating in British Parliamentary format in which debate lasts for an hour where four two-member teams, divided into two sides – government and opposition, defend and oppose a motion or a debate topic respectively.

The event will be judged by national and international adjudicators, under the leadership of Nishma Gautam from Nepal and Raad Sharar from Bangladesh. Prapoosa KC from DNN is convening the championship. The event will be glorified by the presence of Maggie Doyne, founder of BlinkNow foundation as the chief guest.

“DNN has been contributing for the establishment, promotion and institutionalization of debate culture in Nepal and this event takes the journey to a new level,” says Pradeep Ghimire, Chairperson of DNN. “We are also looking forward to organizing MahaSangram International BP Championship 2017 in partnership with Xavier Academy this July,” he adds.

Zonta VidhuShe has partnered with Zonta Club of Kathmandu as the title sponsor and with NAMI College, Jorpati Kathmandu as venue partner. Youth Initiative is an associate partner for the programme.
