Rajbiraj, November 3, 2018: A 19 years old youth from Dom Community, Dinesh Kumar Marik bagged MBBS Scholarship. It is considered unimaginable to study MBBS for anyone from Dom Community because of the extreme poverty and discrimination.
Dinesh who is from Rampura at Chhinamasta Rural Municipality-9, Saptari not only dreamt of studying MBBS but also got the opportunity to pursue MBBS in scholarship. He is the first person from Dom Community to study MBBS. He has escalated the while Dom Community.
He is the son of Dalit campaigner Yuktila Marik and Furaki Devi. He studied a local secondary school and passes his high school from Happyland Higher Secondary School, Rajbiraj. His father Yuktilal shared, “I did everything I could to finance his education. Today, his efforts have paid off. My son always wanted to become a great person when he grew up. He has secured the scholarship provided by University Grant Commission to study MBBS and is preparing to join Birgunj-based National Medical College.”
Shyam Sundar Yadav, Founder Chair of Maithali Cultural Council Saptari shared, “The achievement of Dinesh is an inspiration for other students from the Dom community.” Yuktilal, who is also the central chair of Dom Promotion Society, said, “The country was home to 13,832 people from the Dom community. Around 3,000 people from the Dom community live in Saptari district alone.”
Only 17 students have passed Grade 10 and 10 have passed +2 from Dom Community. Only 3 students have completed Bachelor’s level across the country.
