March 9, 2017: Four Nepali currencies viz. five-hundred-rupee-note, five-rupee-note, one-rupee-note, and two-rupee-coin have been listed among the world’s 21 most beautiful currencies. Each year, the world’s favourite bank notes are recognised in a competition run by International Bank Note Society.
“Nepal boasts some lovely notes, such as this one showing two tigers in great detail,” says the International Bank Note Society to the five-hundred-rupee-note which is in the 11th position in the list.
To the five-rupee-note, which is placed in 12th position, the organization says, “Animals feature strongly here too – these two yaks which are important in Nepalese culture.”
“The simplicity of colours stands out in this one rupee note, also from Nepal,” the organization says to the one-rupee-note.
Likewise, two-rupee-coin, which entails a man herding oxen through a field has been ranked in the 19th position.
New Zealand had topped the list published by the British newspaper The Telegraph, with this five-dollar-note portraying a yellow-eyed penguin and daisies.
