Ghataraj Memorial School emerged the proud winner of the Nepal edition of Wild Wisdom Quiz (WWQ) 2019. The winners go on to represent the country in the international finale of Asia’s biggest wildlife quiz to be held in New Delhi, India on 20 November 2019.
Organized by WWF Nepal’s The Generation Green campaign, a total of 500 students from 250 schools across Nepal participated in WWQ Nepal, progressing from the preliminary and qualifier rounds to arrive at the final event organized in Kathmandu today. Kathmandu World School finished in second position while Shreekul Vidyalaya secured third place. Themed ‘Exploring Our Planet”, the quiz centered around the significance of our irreplaceable natural resources; forests and wildlife, oceans and rivers, plants and animals. Participants this year included students from 14 districts – Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Chitwan, Bara, Parsa, Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Makwanpur, Bardia, Banke, Kailali, Dang and Kanchanpur.
The winners of the national competition said, “We feel fantastic winning the national competition and will work extra hard to prepare for the international finale.”
“It is heartening to see this diverse mix of youth equipped with environmental knowledge. This will go a long way in creating a new generation of conservation leaders wherein our youth can be the leaders of tomorrow.” said Bishnu Shrestha, Undersecretary at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation.
“The Wild Wisdom Quiz aims to promote understanding of biodiversity and nature among young students through engaging and interactive components that builds on the foundations of environmental knowledge of students at an early stage, positioning them to make informed decisions for a better Nepal.” said Shristi KC, Officer for Campaigns and Education, WWF Nepal.
Now in its third edition, WWF Nepal initially introduced Wild Wisdom Quiz (WWQ) in 2017 reaching out to 104 schools in Kathmandu Valley. Wild Wisdom Quiz was initiated by WWF India in 2008. Now, in its eleventh year, the quiz has grown to become Asia’s biggest quiz on wildlife.
