Government to install weather radars for better weather forecasts

Kathmandu, January 28, 2018: The government of Nepal is preparing to install three weather radars in the country for the purpose of improving weather forecasts and real time data on atmospheric weather conditions.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology(DoHM), three radars will be installed in Rata Nangala, Surkhet of the western region, Ribdikot, Palpa  of the central region and Rametar, Udayapur of the eastern region .

Rishi Ram Sharma, Director General of DoHM, mentioned these type of radars are the first ones being installed in Nepal as they are automatic stations which will be scanning the sky in order to send a feedback with data relating to weather conditions.

Sharma explained that these radars will provide significant information that will be useful for aviation, disaster alert and agriculture sector. After getting the real time data on atmospheric activities, the aviation sector and even the general public can plan their activities accordingly, avoiding any risks. “The radar can generate data, allowing the local authorities and communities to be alert or better prepared for an approaching catastrophe. This can assist vulnerable communities in dealing with natural disaster.”, mentioned Sharma.

With the financial assistance of the World Bank under the Building Resilience to Climate-Related Hazards Disaster Project, the weather department has completed installation of the weather radar in Surkhet which is expected to be commissioned soon. The plan on Palpa and Udyapur radars was developed recently. Other remaining radars, which are being funded by the government, will come into operation by the next fiscal year. These weather radar costs around Rs 180 million.

By caning the whole sky the radar finds out the positioning of clouds  , nature for rain or hailstorm, also the place where it has rained along with the duration of rainfall . It will help in the proper and smooth functioning of the transportation system including aviation sector and will provide real time information which is essential for aviation sector.
