Government to Officially Announce the Social Security Scheme on November 27

Kathmandu, November 25, 2018: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will officially announce the social security scheme on November 27, 2018. According to the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MoLESS), all formal sector workers will be escorted by the scheme which has been based as per the Contribution-based Social Security Regulation. However, MoLESS is looking forward to launching the scheme for informal sector workers too.

As per Contribution-based Social Security Regulation, the contributor must have deposited their instalment regularly in the Social Security Fund for at least six months to receive the medical treatment scheme. Similarly, for health and maternity service, the contributor must have worked for 18 months and regularly deposited their instalments for at least 12 months.

Secretary at MoLESS, Mahesh Prasad Dahal said, “The first phase of the scheme will cover medical treatment, health and maternity security scheme. Eventually, it will cover the accident and disability security scheme, dependent family security scheme, and old age security scheme.”

MoLESS reported that it has already started collecting data of Kathmandu Valley since November 22 and will start collecting data of formal sector workers from December 1 in Province 3, from December 16 in Province 1 and from December 30 in Province 2. Likewise, data collection for Gandaki Province and Province 5 will
start from January 15 and for Karnali Province and Province 7 it will start from January 29.
