IMPLEMENTATION OF WORKING JOURNALISTS ACT NECESSARY: MINISTER RIJAL

Dhankuta, Aug. 19: Minister for Information and Communications, Dr. Minendra Rijal, has said it was necessary to implement the Working Journalists Act for the institutional development of the journalism in the country.

Speaking at a programme organized to hand over the Tika Hari Dhananjay Journalism Award, which was established with an objective to encourage journalists working at risk, Minister Rijal said as much as it is necessary to bring the Working Journalists Act into implementation, it is equally challenging.

Since there is significant number of unidentified journalists, it could be a problem in implementing the Act, he said.

Minister Rijal said discussions are held at various level including with the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) regarding what could be done for the interest of the journalists and a concrete decision could be made in the near future to this regard.

At the programme, Minister Rijal awarded radio journalist Devkala Karki, the host of the programme titled ‘Disaster and Risk Mitigation’ aired by Radio Makalu. She was honoured with Rs. 3,000, a letter of appreciation and a shawl.
