Inspiring women for entrepreneurship


On the special occasion of International Women’s Day, GBG Kathmandu women organized a talk show on “Inspiring women for entrepreneurship” which majorly focused on ways of leveraging technology for startup by women. CBG women are community which is focused on helping entrepreneurs focused on building their career on field of technology.

The event saw 3 successful female entrepreneurs from Nepal who shared their success stories, experiences and suggestions for around 40 young girls and inspired them to become entrepreneurs. The speakers for the show were: Nikita Acharaya founder of Urban Girl followed by Swati Lohia business partner at Business Brainz and Kriti Shakya owner Kazi studios.

The first speaker for the show was Nikita Acharya. Nikita beautifully presented her journey. The owner of Urban Girl (UG) an online shopping portal established three years back by two college students, who met while they were working for IT firm. They had idea of establishing online shopping when e-commerce was new to Nepali market. They initially started their venture from selling accessories which has now grown to cakes and garments. UG is an organization which highly encourages woman participation with more than 90% female employees.  Nikita believes that there are lots of opportunities for female entrepreneurs in Nepal. She basically focuses on three points and believes they are root to success. The points involved: ideal idea, changing idea to effort and good marketing. While questioned whether she was a social entrepreneur she gave a witty reply stating if she qualifies four “I” then she can be called so; those for “I” involved:  idea , innovation , impact and income.

Swati Lohia Managing Partner at Business Brainz the organization that provides information about business ventures. Swati, who graduated from Kathmandu University (KU), was a self-starter ever since her college days. She always had the feeling that she should earn for her own, in the very process she started working part-time from her bachelor’s second year. Her core focus marketing is something that revitalizes her. She has over six years of rich experience across marketing functions including branding and promotion strategies. Swati, headed business development and structured organic expansion into newer geographies across Asia for a Nepal based FMCG firm. Before she started her own firm she led marketing function at Coca-cola Nepal. Swati believes in the statement “one day I will”. Swati is very keen to promote woman involvement in her organization because she doesn’t want her story to repeat with young girls. Swati was rejected from her first job interview just because she was a girl.

Kreeti Shakya is Master’s degree holder in Business from Augsburg College, Minnesota; she has worked in multiple projects for fortune 500 companies like target Corporation, #M and General Mills. In her past twelve years’ experience, she has won multiple webby awards for her designs and an Effie award for her work on Lee.com. She believes that design should follow function and her work reflects simplicity and clarity of the purpose. Kreeti is currently owner/creative Director of Kazi Studious, a creative agency based in Kathmandu.  Kriti focuses on three things in her life they are always follow your dream; you’re no less than anyone else and always focus on your target audience. She states if these three things are focused your startup will touch heights in no time.

The whole program basically focused on how Nepal is “land of opportunities “for women. There are plenty of opportunities waiting; you just need to grab them on time.
