KATHMANDU VALLEY SHOULD BE DECLARED PLASTIC BAGS-FREE AREA

Kathmandu, Aug. 25: The Environment Conservation Committee of the Legislature-Parliament has directed the government to prepare policies and structures to make the Kathmandu valley a plastic bag-free zone from beginning of 2072 BS.

A meeting of the Committee held on Monday has directed the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to effectively implement the Plastic Bag Regulations and Guidelines, 2068 BS.

The decision was taken by considering the standards and impacts of plastic bags use on environment.

Likewise, the Committee has directed the Ministry of Industry to carry out a study on converting the plastic bags industries into cloths bag industry and inform the Committee about the its feasibility.

Likewise, the Committee has decided to write to ministry to discourage the use of plastic bag producers and users, and encourage the jute, paper and cloths bag producers.
