Gorkhabazaar, 22nd February, 2015 : People of northern VDCs in Gorkha district are to be mobilized for the preservation of the endangered snow leopards.

The Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) has been preparing to mobilize the locals of Chhekampar, Chumchet and Samagaun in the Snow leopard Preservation Campaign. Upper region of Chhekampar, Chumchet and Samagaun are known habitat of the snow leopards.

MCAP Chief Raj Kumar Gurung said, “At first, we will make people aware about the preservation of snow leopard then the locals will be mobilized in the campaign.”

Before this, the MCAP had also mobilized the locals of northern part in the district in preservation of lophophorus.

The MCAP had traced seven snow leopards at Chhekampar and Samagaun VDCs in course of its survey carried out in 2012 and 2013. According to the MCAP’s report, of them, five were male and the remaining were female snow leopards.

The Snow Leopard Preservation Campaign is going to be launched with the financial support of Rs 2.5 million of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said Gurung.
