Kathmandu, December 31, 2018: Mahakumba-5th Annual National Schools Debating Championship was co–organized by Debate Network Nepal (DNN) and National Secondary School concluded on 29th December 2018 at the premise of Kathmandu Model College, Balkumari.
The tournament was the selection tournament and the top 35 best debaters of the championship will be eligible to apply to become part of Nepal’s national school’s team for WSDC 2019 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This four-day long championship saw Saugat Pokharel, Pratyush Ghimire and Anudit Basnet of Team S.P.A.M become the Opens Champions. Team St. Xavier’s College (SXC) “C” of Lata Regmi, Manoj Dhakal and Riya Singhal grabbed the title of Novice Champions. Anushuya Thapa and Meghna Adhikari were declared the best speaker and the best novice speaker respectively. Manish Kadel became the best adjudicator of the tournament.
The tournament saw more than 150 participants coming together to debate and discuss on national and international issues. Nishma Gautam, the Managing Director of DNN shared, “The quality of debates an precedence that Mahakumbha holds is invaluable. This is not just a debate tournament, it is a festival for the community to come together, celebrate the art of persuasion and introduce new debaters to very best of debating. This is not just a mere selection of national team of Nepal for WSDC, it is also an initiation of countless participation in countless debate tournaments to come.”
The tournament was judged by some of the finest national and international adjudicators and was guided by a Chief Adjudication Panel (CAP) consisting of Adel Mostaque Ahmed and Asif Mehedi from Bangladesh, Pawan Adhikari, Swastika Pradhan, Raj Kharel, Saurav Bhatta and Apratim Shrivastava from Nepal.
